Traits of the Religious Spirit:

  1. Makes God out to be a distant taskmaster who is impossible to please.

  2. Puts an unbalanced emphasis on the outward appearance and religious form

    or practice.

  3. Marked by criticism and cynicism.

  4. Pride is at its root.

  5. Harshly judges those who don’t meet their standards for righteousness

  6. Don’t meet their own standards for righteousness

  7. Controlling. Manipulates through fear and shame.

  8. Counterfeits the work of the Holy Sprit.

  9. Tries to shut down the work of the Holy Spirit.

  10. Charms those who agree with it. Crucifies those who don’t.

    Questions for Discussion:

    1. Do you see God as an impossible task master?

    2. Are you critical?

    3. Do you hold others to a higher standard than you hold yourself?

    4. Do you try to control the people in your life and use God to do so?

    5. Do you believe the Lord has assigned you to “keep them straight?”

    6. Do you think He won’t love, like you, or bless you until you’re acting right?

Praying Together:

Thank Him. What can we thank Him for?

Praise Him. What is one thing about who Jesus is that we can praise Him about?

Ask Him. What is a need we have or an area in which we would like to see God break through.

Listen to Him: What is on God’s heart about your need. What is He saying to you?
